The higher education system in Utah consists of 14 public colleges and universities, such as the University of Utah, Utah State University, and Snow College, as well as notable private institutions such as Brigham Young University and Western Governors University. Western Governors University, a private nonprofit institution, offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business, education, information technology, and health professions. What makes Western Governors University notable is that it’s a distance learning institution, which means it doesn’t offer any on-campus classes. Accredited Community Colleges in Utah
The largest junior colleges in Utah are Salt Lake Community College and Dixie State College of Utah. Salt Lake Community College provides certificate and associate degree programs in applied science, pre-engineering, business, and more to its more than 33,000 students. It also offers online associate degrees in business, criminal justice, general studies, and sociology. The college’s distance learning programs are part of an overall increase in emphasis on online education in Utah’s state colleges and universities. Demand for online courses has increased exponentially since 2001, when about 1,200 students participated in distance learning courses. Eleven years later, that number has grown to approximately 12,000 students. according to the Deseret News .
